WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA TO APPLY FOR A HABITAT HOME?

 

1. Need for Adequate Shelter

  • Currently living in substandard housing with one or more physical problems including plumbing, electrical, water, heating, etc…

  • Overcrowding

  • Rent is 50 percent or more of income

  • Any other inadequate housing need that you may be experiencing.

 

2. Ability to Pay/Income Guidelines

  • The ability to make monthly mortgage payments of approximately $600- $950 over a 30 year period.

  • Total gross monthly income must be between 40 percent and 80 percent of the Federal Median Income of Jackson County based on family size.

  • Must be discharged from bankruptcy for at least one year prior to start of application process.

  • No outstanding liens or judgments and no outstanding collections totaling more than $1,000.

3. Willingness to Partner

  • Must be able and willing to put in a minimum of 500 hours of “sweat equity” helping build their own home, where each adult family member who will live in the completed house is required to complete 200 hours of their own. Friends may donate any additional hours to the family.

  • Must be willing to actively participate in local campaigns and marketing for Habitat for Humanity awareness and fundraising efforts. 

  • In addition, all applicants must be a Jackson county resident for at least one year. All income providers must United States citizen or permanent legal resident. All applicants must not have owned a home in the past three years.
